Hypnosis for PTSD
There are many markers that may highlight that hypnosis for PTSD could be suited to us. Do you have strong associations to certain songs? I do.
It’s amazing the way our mind works and pairs events and triggers to create memories.
I came across this song ( WRONG SIDE OF HEAVEN ) and it inspired me to shed some light on the terrible illness that is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Did you know that approximately 460,00 veterans suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in their lifetime?!
For those that suffer PTSD life can be horrific and confusing reliving the stress and fear that they cant seem to escape even though the traumatic event was so long ago. Day after day those same feelings rising up in their minds and bodies, the need to escape, the vicious episodes of rage and the debilitating feeling of being hyper vigilant to the point of breaking, leading to isolation from society.
These are only some of the symptoms that are experienced during the day not to mention the nightmares and lack of sleep that leads to mental imbalance and fatigue. Imagine walking down the road and something as simple as a car backfiring sends you straight in to a panic attack and fearing for your life.
There is a case study where a veteran that had been home some time and was adjusting well started to experience uncontrollable panic attacks for what seemed no reason. After spending time with a therapist they discovered that the only change in his life was that his wife had changed the brand of soap for the family.
The problem with our conscious mind is that it has the ability to forget and prioritise memories as time goes by. The memories that are stored by our unconscious mind between the amygdala and the hippocampus are burned in and are activated regularly keeping them fresh and top of mind for survival. In this case the soap was the same brand as he used during the war and being that the amygdala is constantly scanning the environment for threats via our senses, it recognised the scent and sounded the alarm for him to fight, flee or freeze a avoid a threat……. a threat that isn’t present and only exists in his memories.
When do i need hypnosis for ptsd
Imagine having a shower and for no reason you fall to your knees in panic not knowing why you are terrified let alone if you should run, turn to rage or fall to your knees.
This survival mode is a sure means to chronic stress, anxiety, panic, mental and physical illness leading to social isolation, depression and suicide.
But you don’t have to be a veteran to suffer PTSD. Many of us suffer PTSD through various forms of abuse, serious injury, threats and violence, just to mention just a few.
Fortunately neuroscience is shedding light on the way our brain stores and recalls memories, which give’s us therapists a means of addressing the affliction using psycho therapeutic interventions.
The reason I love and chose a career in Hypnotherapy is that it directly addresses the unconscious mind in trance and works directly with the memories that are stored there.
There is only so much that we can do by communicating with the conscious mind while awake and some of what is said is filtered out by the conscious mind being critical of the information it is exposed to.
Hyper vigilance and the associated chemicals released inhibit our ability to be open to information that we receive no matter how good that advice is. Also how do you take advice when you don’t trust anyone or anything around you.
There is much power in finding a hypnotherapist that knows about the relationship between your past, the central nervous system, the limbic and cortical systems, and our perceptions of our environment leading to physical illness.
In my hypnotherapy clinic in Sydney I’ve found that something as simple as understanding why we feel the way we do is the first step to lasting freedom from suffering.
Using techniques to rewire our brain can relieve the symptoms and address the underlying causes of PTSD and other mental illness, which goes a long way to adjusting back in to an adaptive life.
