Anxiety hypnosis
I’m working with a client via phone today after a recent traumatic event prompted them to come to me for anxiety hypnosis.
It’s the same response i see continually in clinic. Never ending questions… Why is this happening to me…… This is how I feel (on loop)….. I feel like I want to vomit…. Will this go away…… How will I have the energy to keep fighting this to mention a few.
My reply…. It’s happening to you because you experienced a traumatic event and the part of your brain that remembers the trauma is doing its job to protect you. I’m happy its working because if it wasn’t your life would surely end a lot sooner than it will when its working says neuro-scientific studies.
I understand how you feel as I’ve been there myself too. I know it feels like you are solving the puzzle by running it over and over in your mind though the part of your brain that needs to make the decision and come to a conclusion isn’t working right now, its disabled by adrenaline and nor Adrenalin.
Effects of anxiety
You feel like you want to vomit because the nor-adrenaline has shunted all the blood from your gut to your extremities. Your gut has stopped working to preserve energy to fight or run away from the threat.
No your anxiety will not go away. You didn’t catch anxiety from someone, we all need it to stay alive longer and just need to keep stress balanced. You don’t have to live in fear of it coming back considering it never leaves. Its healthy to work with it so it can assist you to survive as its supposed to do.
You will have the energy to fight this by firstly stopping fighting yourself. The fear response is there to protect you. Its the subconscious part of your brain protecting yourself, so fighting yourself clearly wont help you to lower your stress/anxiety/fear response. What may help is anxiety hypnosis.
Stop the fight, accept that your mind has been hijacked by stress, listen to me, focus on the exercises I’ve given you so you can calm down to a level where your brain can function again.
What to do next
Then we can make an appointment to sit in my comfy relaxing chair in our safe clinic and have a nice chat with this fear inducing part of your brain to help it remain calm in future. Ill teach you how to avoid exciting it and bringing on anxiety or panic when its not warranted.
I’ve found its always the same basic mechanism from simple apprehension to avoidance to not being able to leave the house. It is only the trigger that varies be it environmental, or from our own thoughts, perceptions and anticipations of the future based on trauma from the past.
Anxiety is a specialised area and being able to get results requires knowing more than your general therapist and having lived it first hand yourself as I have is a definite advantage in understanding your clients needs, the support require and what needs to be done to keep anxiety balanced and working for you rather than against you.
The stress response leading to anxiety is very normal and needs to be lowered back to its calm level of functioning by preferably not damaging your body with stress chemicals and inflicting unwanted side effects in the process of treatment.
